Alcudia Sea Explorer runs this cruise the way a wildlife trip ought to be run: twelve people, a quiet petrol engine, and no hurry. The boats were built for whale watching, and the low noise footprint is the point. Dolphins that are not being chased tend to come to the boat on their own, ride the wake for a while and leave when they have had enough.

Departures leave from Alcudiamar on the north coast. The 5:30am start puts you on the water before the light comes up and runs about two and a half hours; later starts run closer to three. The operator commits to a minimum of thirty minutes alongside the dolphins on every departure, which is a longer window than most north-coast boats allow for.

The return leg is the part guests tend not to expect. The boat skirts the cliffs of Cap de Formentor, slips into sea caves and rock clefts too narrow for the big excursion catamarans, and stops for ten to fifteen minutes at Es Coll Baix, a shingle beach you can otherwise reach only on a steep forty-minute walk down from the Victòria ridge.

Hotel pickup and drop-off is available as a booking option. Without it you make your own way to the first pier by the Alcudiamar entrance, moorings 15 to 17, fifteen minutes before departure.

• In adverse or uncertain weather the operator may cancel up to one hour before departure, so check your email and your spam folder the evening before.

• If you plan to arrive by taxi, book it the day before — early-morning cabs in Alcúdia are scarce.
