Southwest Coast Dolphin Cruises

Two boats work the Calvià coast, both run by Cruise Cormoran, and between them they hold 6,030 reviews, which is well over a third of every dolphin review on this site. They also cost $46, which is half the price of a seat on a north-coast small boat. Both facts have the same explanation.

Volume is the business model

These are proper excursion vessels: a bar, toilets, shade, room to walk about, and a glass-bottom viewing deck on the Peguera boat. They carry a crowd, and carrying a crowd is what makes $46 work. A twelve-seat boat out of Alcúdia has to charge $97 for exactly the same thirty minutes because it has twelve fares to cover its morning with.

What you get for the difference is proximity and quiet. What you get here is a rail, a drink, and a skipper who has been reading this stretch of water for years. Guests are consistently satisfied: 4.6 for the Peguera glass-bottom cruise from 3,816 people, 4.5 for Santa Ponsa from 2,214. Several reviews describe sightings twenty minutes out of the marina.

Which harbour, which length

The practical difference is where you board. Santa Ponsa leaves the Embarcadero on Carrer de Ramon de Montcada; Peguera leaves Platja Torà, about fifteen minutes west along the coast. Take whichever is closer to your hotel — the water they sail is the same.

The Peguera listing is the more flexible of the two. It sells three lengths: a ninety-minute run that concentrates on the dolphins and skips the swim, and two-hour and two-and-a-half-hour versions that add a stop in a cove. Santa Ponsa runs the two-hour trip with the swim built in and lends snorkel masks against a twenty-euro deposit.

What swims here

The species on this coast are the same as everywhere around the island. The bottlenose dolphin is the coastal animal and the one in most of the photographs; research on the Balearic population found the dolphins around Mallorca and Menorca form a group genetically distinct from those around Ibiza and Formentera. Further out you may meet striped dolphins, the most common offshore cetacean in the Mediterranean, which travel in groups of twenty to over a hundred and come within reach of the coast where the seabed drops to 100 to 200 metres. The listings also name Risso’s dolphins; that is the operator’s claim rather than a sighting record.

If certainty matters more than price

Neither of these boats guarantees anything, and the two operators who do both sail from the north coast, where the fares start at $67 for the catamaran and reach $97 for a twelve-seat departure.
