Seven of Mallorca's ten dolphin boats leave before dawn and one leaves at 10:30. What the early start actually changes, and when the later boat is the better booking.
Seven of the ten dolphin boats on this site leave before the sun is up. One leaves at 10:30. Everybody assumes the dawn boats exist for the photographs, and everybody is wrong: the early start is about the sea and the animals, and the light is a bonus that happens to be spectacular.

What dawn changes
Two things happen off Mallorca in the hour around sunrise.
The sea is at its flattest, because the thermal breeze that builds over a hot island has not started yet. On a 200-seat catamaran that barely registers. On a twelve-seat speedboat crossing open water for forty minutes it is the difference between a pleasant morning and a wet, bruising one — which is why the small-boat operators, who have every commercial reason to run more departures, keep putting their best one at first light.
The dolphins are working. The north-coast pods feed early, and a skipper leaving at dawn is going where he expects them rather than where they were. Both of the island’s sighting guarantees attach to dawn departures: Alcudia Sea Explorer runs a 5:30am start in high summer, and JetFun sets its sunrise departure about thirty minutes before the sun itself.
What dawn costs
The alarm, obviously. But work out the real number before you book.
Sunrise at Port d’Alcúdia falls around 06:19 in mid-June and 07:58 in mid-October. A boat leaving thirty minutes ahead of it, plus fifteen minutes to be at the pier, plus the drive, means a 4:30am start in June if you are staying an hour away. Early-morning taxis in Alcúdia are scarce enough that the semi-private cruise tells you in its own listing to book one the day before.
The departure time also moves all season, which catches people out. A time you were quoted in July is not the time you sail in September. Operators confirm it by email the evening before, and that email is the only version that counts.

The boat that never leaves in the dark
Palma Cruises leaves the Muelle de las Golondrinas on Palma’s Paseo Marítimo at 10:30 and 14:00. It is the only listing here with no pre-dawn departure at all, it runs just under four hours, and it stops in a cove to swim. Resort transfers can be added from Magaluf, Palmanova, El Arenal and the Playa de Palma.
The trade is visible in the figures. It carries the lowest rating of the ten boats here, 4.4 from 378 guests, and it makes no sighting guarantee. Several reviews describe a good trip with fewer animals than hoped. Mid-morning is a different sea and, some days, different odds.
That does not make it a bad booking. If you are in Palma for two nights without a car, a 4am cross-island drive is not going to happen, and a real dolphin trip on the real Mediterranean at 10:30 beats a marine park by a distance.
Which to pick
Take a dawn boat if the animals are the point of the day, if you are staying anywhere in the north of the island, or if anyone in the party would rather have a flat sea than a lie-in. Take the Alcúdia small boats for the guarantees, or the sunrise catamaran if you want the early start without the small-boat ride.
Take the Palma cruise if the early start would genuinely sour the holiday, if you have no car, or if you are based in the southwest and an hour over the mountains at 4am is not on the table.

On the dawn boats, weather permitting. The Alcúdia catamaran builds a fifteen-minute stop for it into a published schedule. One operator notes that sunrise applies to the first excursion of the day only, so check which slot you are booking.
What should I wear on a dawn departure?
More than the forecast suggests. You are on open water before the sun is up, often at speed, and every small-boat listing asks for warm outdoor clothing — in August as much as in May. Add sunglasses for the hour after the sun clears the horizon.
