Six of the fourteen dolphin boats sold in Mallorca leave from one bay, and five of those from one marina. That concentration is not marketing. It is where the animals are.

What the boats are going out to

The water off Cap de Formentor drops away quickly, and the resident bottlenose pods of Mallorca’s north coast work it every morning. Research on the Balearic population found that the dolphins around Mallorca and Menorca are a distinct group from those around Ibiza and Formentera, separated by the deep channel between them, and an acoustic survey in Cabrera National Park to the south identified 82 individual bottlenose dolphins, part of that population resident year-round. These animals are not passing through on migration. Alcúdia’s skippers know where they feed because they go out to the same water every day of the season.

That is the practical reason both of the island’s guarantees come from this port. Alcudia Sea Explorer commits to a minimum of thirty minutes with the dolphins on every departure; JetFun makes the same commitment on its twelve-seat speedboat. No operator on the southwest coast does.

Six boats, two price brackets

The choice from Alcudiamar comes down to how many people are standing between you and the rail.

At the top end are the twelve-seat departures. The semi-private cruise runs quiet petrol engines built for whale watching, holds the half-hour guarantee, and finishes with a swim at Es Coll Baix, a shingle cove with no road down to it. JetFun’s speedboat makes the same guarantee and adds something nobody else does: the captain photographs and films the encounter and hands over the files, so nobody spends the half hour behind a phone. It does not stop to swim.

In the middle is the trip with free hotel pickup, which collects you from any of eighteen points across Alcúdia and Can Picafort and brings you back. Rated 4.9 by its guests, it is the only fare here that includes the transfer, and on a 5am start that is worth more than it sounds.

At the value end is the sunrise catamaran, a 150-to-200 passenger boat that serves breakfast on the way home and, on the rare morning nothing is spotted, gives you a free ticket to come back. It costs $67 against $90 to $97 for the small boats, and it is the steadiest vessel in the bay — which matters if anyone in your group is uneasy about open water.

The part the listings underplay

Whatever you board, expect roughly an hour of running before the engines come off. The pods feed a long way out, and that distance is exactly why the Alcúdia boats have the sighting record they do. On a breezy morning in a small boat that hour is genuinely bumpy. On the catamaran you will barely notice it.

Sunrise departures also move. At Port d’Alcúdia the sun comes up around 06:19 in mid-June, 07:00 in mid-August and 07:58 by mid-October, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of October. Operators set the departure against the day’s actual sunrise and confirm it by email the evening before. If you booked in May for a trip in September, the time you were quoted is no longer the time you sail.
