Mallorca Dolphin Tours

Every dolphin boat in Mallorca sells the same thirty minutes. What separates them is the two and a half hours on either side of it, and the price you pay for the difference.

That is worth saying plainly, because the listings do not. A three-hour dolphin tour is roughly half an hour of dolphins, forty minutes to an hour of running out to find them, and the rest spent on the coastline and, on most boats, a swim. The pods feed well offshore, and the boats with the most reliable sightings are the ones willing to cover the distance. Once you know that, the choice stops being “which tour is best” and becomes something answerable: how much boat do you want around those thirty minutes, and how early are you prepared to get up.

Two coasts, two different trips

The north coast is where the fleet is. Boats leave Port d’Alcúdia and Can Picafort before dawn and work the water off Cap de Formentor, and it is no coincidence that both of the operators who put a guaranteed thirty minutes in writing sail from there. Alcudia Sea Explorer caps its departures at twelve passengers and guarantees the half hour; JetFun runs a twelve-seat speedboat out of Alcudiamar on the same promise. The trade is price. A seat on one of those runs $90 to $97, roughly double the southwest coast.

The southwest is the value end. Cruise Cormoran runs two large boats, one from Santa Ponsa and one from Platja Torà in Peguera, both at $46, and between them they account for well over a third of every dolphin review on this site. These are proper excursion vessels with a bar, a toilet, shade and a glass-bottom viewing deck on the Peguera boat. You share the rail with a crowd, and the crowd is why it costs what it does.

Palma is the third option and the odd one out. The morning cruise from the Muelle de las Golondrinas leaves at 10:30 or 14:00, which makes it the only listing here with no pre-dawn departure at all. It is also the longest, at just under four hours, and it will collect you from Magaluf, Palmanova, El Arenal or the Playa de Palma for an extra fare. It carries the lowest rating in the catalogue at 4.4, and reviews suggest why: the sightings are less certain than on the north coast.

What you are actually looking at

Two species do most of the work here. The bottlenose dolphin is the coastal one, and the animal in nearly every photograph the operators use. Research on the Balearic population found that the dolphins around Mallorca and Menorca are genetically distinct from those around Ibiza and Formentera, separated by the deep channel between the two groups, and an acoustic study in Cabrera National Park identified at least 82 individuals, some of them resident year-round. These are not visitors passing through. They live here.

Further out you may meet striped dolphins, the most common offshore cetacean in the Mediterranean, which travel in groups of twenty to more than a hundred and come close enough to the coast to be seen where the seabed drops to around 100 to 200 metres. Several listings also name Risso’s dolphins; that is the operators’ claim rather than ours, though the deep water north of Formentor is the right habitat for them.

No boat on this site offers swimming with dolphins, and you should be wary of any that does. The skippers here hold their distance and let the animals decide whether to approach, which is the single thing guests praise most often in the reviews.

Getting the morning right

Dawn departures are not a gimmick. The sea off Mallorca is flattest in the hour around sunrise, the animals are most active then, and the light is the reason half the photographs on this page exist. The catch is that sunrise moves. At Port d’Alcúdia it falls around 06:19 in mid-June and 07:58 by mid-October, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of that month — so a boat someone told you leaves at 5:30am in July leaves nearer 7am in September. Operators set the time against the day’s actual sunrise and send it by email the evening before. Read that email.

If you want to swim as well, the water is on your side from June to November, running about 25°C in July and peaking near 26°C in August. Most north-coast boats stop at Es Coll Baix, a shingle cove under grey cliffs with no road down to it; the Santa Ponsa and Palma boats anchor in coves closer to their own harbours.

Choosing between them

The short version: take a twelve-seat boat from Alcúdia or Can Picafort if the animals are the point, a catamaran if you have children or a queasy stomach, and the Palma cruise if you are staying in the city and will not face a pre-dawn drive across the island.
